Letters from the Director

We all are in the midst of a revolution in the way information moves
from one place to another. The School of Journalism at Southern Illinois University Carbondale is
a good place to get in on the ground floor.  Every day we teach students how to use new
technology to communicate news, photos, ads, video and audio on all of
the new platforms that have changed the face of media.

Brown Dawg and William Freivogel

At SIUC entering freshmen have a chance work on the student newspaper, the
Daily Egyptian, or the student magazine, Unleashed. At other universities they have to wait until they are juniors. The DE has turned
out some of the nation's top journalists. See the DE online at
http://www.siude.com/. There also are advertising clubs where students
compete with other colleges to put together the best ad pitch for a
new product.  In our multimedia classes students produce a book and
companion website on a story of importance to Southern Illinois.  Take
a look at our last project on the Shawnee National Forest.
http://journal.siu.edu/shawnee/ In addition, photojournalists get
together each fall with the top professionals from around the country
to shoot a weekend in the life of a small Illinois town.  Then those
photos and videos are put online and produced in another book.  To see
our photos of Murphsyboro, Ill., go to http://southof64.com/. Also here's a video on the photoj program

This year, we have begun a new specialization to teach students how to
produce a website. Almost every institution today needs someone to
create and run its website, so this specialization is an opening to
21st century jobs. Next year, we're hoping to add courses on sports
reporting and promotion, particularly hot areas of interest.  The sports specialization is pending final university approval.

The School of Journalism is one of 113 accredited journalism programs in the United States and one of only five in Illinois.  So if you are interested in journalism, photojournalism, advertising,
producing a web site or sports media contact me at

media.
