Important SIUC policy notice regarding compensation for internships

The policy regarding SIUC's liability insurance for students participating in internships states that students must be participating in unpaid internships and enrolled for academic credit. Both conditions must be satisfied in order to remain eligible for SIUC's liability insurance.

A stipend of any amount (regardless of whether it is called a stipend, allowance, or scholarship) disqualifies a student from coverage under SIUC's policy.
These situations are determined on a case-by-case basis. Liability coverage is determined on individual facts and circumstances. It is important that students are aware of this before they seek internships. An intern receiving room and board as part of the internship is also disqualified from coverage. If a student receives an occasional subway pass, is treated to lunch, or is reimbursed for mileage, liability coverage will probably be extended.
