Full accreditation clears first hurdle

The School of Journalism is one step closer to a return to full accreditation by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communication.

The ACEJMC's accrediting committee recommended full status for SoJ at its Chicago meeting over the weekend of March 14-15, 2010.

According to SoJ Director William Freivogel, the committee delivered a positive report.

"There were no questions and no discussion. The vote was unanimous. This constitutes a recommendation to the full ACEJMC board, which will act May 1," Freivogel said.

ACEJMC officials had revisited campus in the fall of 2009.

Those officials found that SoJ has improved in governance and assessment. A new dean and implementation of a new assessment plan shored up those areas.

Past ACEJMC teams praised the school's "solid instructional foundation that does well by its students." It also commended the "highly productive," "exceptionally qualified and committed faculty."

The ACEJMC team also cited the Daily Egyptian's national honors and noted that "the school's graduates have gone on to great distinction in all of the disciplines it teaches, and the program remains a fertile hiring ground for the Midwest's best news organizations."
