By Ashley Parham

By the year 2008 there were 300 volunteers giving 4,000 hours of service to the Shawnee National Forest. Those numbers evolved into the Shawnee Volunteer Corps, membership in which involves teamwork, leadership, stewardship, partnership and education.

TO VOLUNTEER...contact the Murphysboro Work Center for more information: (618) 687-1731

Why volunteer?

  • The Shawnee National Forest relies more and more on volunteers
  • An incentive program offers free gifts after a certain number of hours of service
  • Personal satisfaction for a job well done and healthy trail system for hikers

Ways to volunteer

  • Wilderness rangers...monitor and support the health of trails
  • Children's programs...teach environmental safety programs with Smokey the Bear
  • Master trail steward...finish a course then assist in managing the volunteers, teach and train
  • Trail Service projects
    • Adopt a trail... for groups, families or individuals to work on trails periodically.
    • Trail clinics... opportunity to work learning trail construction and maintenance
  • Alternative spring break a trail service project that allows you to utilize skills from trail clinics; individuals who complete the master steward course lead these trail projects
